\"starting<\/a>Starting a podcast takes time, devotion and, yes, sometimes a few tears. if you’re going to start a podcast, it helps to begin with a subject you love, AND with people you really like.<\/p>\n

One More Page<\/a> is a podcast for lovers of kids’ books, featuring children’s authors Liz Ledden<\/a>, Kate Simpson<\/a> and Nat Amoor<\/a>e. That’s them on the left in their cute t-shirts (note to self: get some merch!).<\/p>\n

So when Liz Ledden reached out to write a guest post about all that is good about podcasting (and some tips on how to start your own podcast), I jumped at the chance.<\/p>\n

Liz Ledden tells: 6\u202fThings I\u2019ve\u202fLearnt\u202fAbout\u202fPodcasting<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since co-hosting kids\u2019 book podcast One More Page\u202ffor nearly three years\u202falongside fellow authors Kate Simpson and Nat Amoore, I\u2019ve learnt\u202fa thing or two about this whole podcasting biz. Here are six standouts:<\/p>\n

1\/\u202f\u202fIt\u2019s\u202flike your own personal masterclass \u2026 that you share with the world<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Having a podcast about the children\u2019s book world\u202f(One More Page)\u202fmeans you\u2019re constantly asking people about things you\u2019re curious about. And that presumably (and hopefully) listeners are, too. Obsessed with a certain author? Drill them for their creativity tips! Dream of working with a particular\u202fpublisher?\u202fAsk them what they look for in a manuscript, or an author. There\u2019s so much wisdom to be gained from podcasts, and the hosts have as much to learn as their listenership.<\/p>\n

2\/\u202f\u202fIt\u2019s\u202fhard to listen to your own voice (like,\u202freally hard)<\/strong><\/h5>\n

One of the most confronting things about podcasting, especially when starting out, is discovering what your voice \u2018really\u2019 sounds like. Which may then lead you down a rabbit hole of \u2013 why do I laugh like that? Why didn\u2019t I say something different there? Can we just re-release that entire episode already?! But eventually, you do get used to it. (Except for that sentence, and that one too \u2026 Oh god, I hope no one heard that bit!).<\/p>\n

3\/\u202f\u202fIt\u2019s\u202fkind of like a workplace<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Being part of a podcast team is just like a workplace, minus the boss and regular pay packet. There\u2019s the \u2018watercooler\u2019 (a WhatsApp chat mostly filled with ridiculous gifs) and to-do lists to tick off\u202f(yes, our very own KPIs). There\u2019s also break-time banter (the\u202fpre\u202fand post-pod chat),\u202fdodgy\u202foffice politics (It\u2019s\u202fMY\u202freview copy!\u202fNo, MINE!), and people behaving (or singing) badly at the Christmas party \u2013 except ours is recorded for anyone to hear.\u202fAt least we\u202fcan all declare ourselves \u2018Employee of the Year\u2019 \u2013 hooray!<\/p>\n

4\/\u202f\u202fIt\u2019s\u202falso a\u202fbit like being a publisher<\/strong><\/h5>\n

\u2018Sorry, it\u2019s not right for our list\u2019. Sound familiar, writerly people?!\u202fYes, that\u202fage-old publishing\u202frejection\u202fspiel\u202fis sometimes just as applicable to\u202fthe podcast world.\u202fI\u2019ve discovered\u202fhow similar being a podcaster is to a publisher, in terms of people getting in touch:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We have an endless stream of people\u202femailing with requests\u202f(the \u2018slush pile\u2019).<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We sometimes\u202fneed to\u202ftake a raincheck on wonderful content\u202f(a\u202ffully booked\u202fpublishing\u202fschedule).<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There\u2019s the occasional mega-star we\u202ftry to\u202fsqueeze in\u202fno matter what (like when\u202fa celebrity kids\u2019 book author comes knocking\u202fat a publishing house \u2013\u202fhello, mega sales!).<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And just like publishers, we have a few odd bods\u202foffering\u202fcontent not really suited\u202fto One More Page\u202f(like writers who don\u2019t follow submission guidelines\u202for research a publisher first).<\/p>\n

Sorry\u202fto say\u202f\u2026 it\u2019s not right for our list.<\/p>\n

5\/\u202f\u202fIf\u202fsomething goes wrong,\u202fit\u2019ll be at the worst possible time<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Inevitably, any\u202finternet-dependant\u202fventure will face a tech fail or two.\u202fThese, of course,\u202fare exclusively reserved for\u202fthose\u202fhigh-profile\u202fguests you\u2019ve waited your whole life to speak to. But\u202fthat time\u202fyou interview\u202fyour\u202fpal from your writers\u2019 group?\u202fIt will go off without the slightest\u202fof\u202fhitches.\u202fInternet gods, why\u202fdo\u202fyou do this?!\u202f(Sidenote: It\u2019s\u202factually been\u202fa while since this has happened\u202f\u2026 knock on wood!)<\/p>\n

6\/\u202f\u202fGrateful\u202fguests warm the\u202fheart<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Some seasoned authors, illustrators and other bookish figures regularly do the publicity rounds. An interview here, a livestream there, maybe even a coveted TV spot.\u202fThey\u2019re glad\u202fto add One More Page\u202fto their repertoire,\u202fbut it\u202fmightn\u2019t necessarily be a life highlight.<\/p>\n

However,\u202fevery now and then,\u202fsomeone\u202fis\u202fstratospherically excited and grateful for some\u202fpodcasterly\u202fairtime, whether we interview them, review their book or shout\u202fout to\u202ftheir latest venture.<\/p>\n

And when someone tells us how\u202fmuch it means to\u202fthem,\u202fit makes\u202fall the\u202feffort\u202fworthwhile.<\/p>\n

Like the idea of podcasting?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Perhaps you have your own idea for a podcast (or don\u2019t even mind the sound of your own voice!).<\/p>\n

Here are a few things to consider if embarking down the podcasting path:<\/p>\n

Why are you podcasting?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

You don\u2019t necessarily need a product or service to spruik, it might be to build your brand or further your career.<\/p>\n

As authors, we\u2019re able to mention our own books, so think about how you could tie in your existing ventures with your podcast. Of course, you may simply want to connect with likeminded people, but who knows what opportunities that could lead to?<\/p>\n

What is your podcast about, and who is it aimed at?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

If you have several audiences in mind (e.g. across age groups), how will your content cater to them? At One More Page, we imagine some kids might listen as well as adults who love kids\u2019 books, like teacher librarians or writers. That\u2019s why we keep our content G-rated, and also feature kids themselves on the show.<\/p>\n

What will you call your podcast?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

This sets the tone for your show, and requires a bit of research to avoid doubling up. But once you have a name you can set up everything from a website, to an email address, to social media accounts.<\/p>\n

What about all the techie bits?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

From establishing your format, writing your content and contacting potential guests, there\u2019s a whole lot of behind the scenes work in putting a podcast together.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll not only need a website host but an account with a podcast hosting site, which will upload your episodes to all the main podcast apps. Plus some quality headphones with a mic, a quiet place to record and recording software, too.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a world of information a quick google search away to help you work it all out.<\/p>\n

Have fun!<\/strong><\/h5>\n

If the above sounds daunting, it\u2019s mostly related to getting started. Once you\u2019re up and running you can concentrate on producing your content, let the laughs roll and share your fun (and in our case, fandom) with the world!<\/p>\n
