The Mapmaker Chronicles<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0series is pure fiction, but some of the techniques described in the books are based on fact.\u00a0Dead Reckoning<\/em>, for example, is an ancient navigational technique that involves measuring the distance and speed travelled from a fixed point (usually the port from which you\u2019d sailed), while a\u00a0Plumb Line<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a piece of string with a weight fixed to the end \u2013 was used to measure the depth of water.<\/p>\n
