Click each author&#8217;s name to find out more about them \u2013 and where that first moment has taken them.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">\n<h3><strong>Can you remember the moment you first thought about or began writing your own stories, or was it something that crept up on you over time?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/alicepung.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81686\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/alicepung-150x150.png\" alt=\"Alice Pung on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicepung.net\/\">Alice Pung<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cIn Grade 3, a substitute teacher named Mr Galloway said to me &#8220;Keep writing Elizabeth you&#8217;ll burn a hole through that page&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time someone had recognised I was good at this, and even though he got my name wrong, I always remember that moment of recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/NovaWeetman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81678\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/NovaWeetman-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Nova Weetman on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.novaweetman.com.au\/\">Nova Weetman<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cI had an old black typewriter as a kid and I wrote Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries on it.<\/p>\n<p>I only ever wrote the first few pages, because I was never very good at plotting.<\/p>\n<p>By grade six I was fairly adamant that I\u2019d pursue writing as an adult, and I wrote seriously all through high school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Tristan-Bancks-Amber-Melody-Portrait-Studio-1Y1A6307-bw-800x1000-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81683\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Tristan-Bancks-Amber-Melody-Portrait-Studio-1Y1A6307-bw-800x1000-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Tristan Bancks on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tristanbancks.com\/\">Tristan Bancks<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cI remember being in school plays when I was 5, 6, 7 years old. And starting to write my own little skits that I\u2019d perform with other kids at a thing called \u2019The Primary Proms\u2019 which happened once a term.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, I started out writing with performance in mind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have stories I wrote in my Anything Goes Book in fourth grade like \u2018My Life as a Mars Bar\u2019, which I share with kids when I visit schools. It\u2019s must-read stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Zanni-Louise-photo1.credit-Kate-Nutt-photography.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81679\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Zanni-Louise-photo1.credit-Kate-Nutt-photography-150x150.png\" alt=\"Zanni Louise on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zannilouise.com\/\">Zanni Louise<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cI always told stories for as long as I can remember. When my dad brought home a typewriter when I was five I wrote some of them up and shared them in a folder with friends and family. I even got a Principal&#8217;s sticker!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I still have those stories. I used to always write plays for my cousins and brothers to perform at Christmas too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Belinda-Murrell-with-Silver-Sea-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81682\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Belinda-Murrell-with-Silver-Sea-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Belinda Murrell on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/belindamurrell.com.au\/\">Belinda Murrell<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cI was about seven when I first started writing my own stories, poems, and plays. I remember this was a step on from imaginary games where I\u2019d act out scenes from books I loved, or my own stories and daydreams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My early stories were filled with fairies, giants, witches, and lots of adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/jacqueline-harvey-author-pic-200x280-e1444970167614.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81684\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/jacqueline-harvey-author-pic-200x280-e1444970167614-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"Jacqueline Harvey on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/jacqueline-harvey-author-pic-200x280-e1444970167614-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/jacqueline-harvey-author-pic-200x280-e1444970167614-100x100.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/jacquelineharvey.com.au\/\">Jacqueline Harvey<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cI wrote stories in high school but it was really at University that I thought I would love to become a children\u2019s author.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It took a long time to realise that dream but it was there ticking away for ages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Katrina-Nannestead-7-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81681\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Katrina-Nannestead-7-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Kristina Nannestad on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katrinanannestad.com\/\">Kristina Nannestad<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cThe desire to write stories crept up on me. I was an avid letter writer from my late teens onwards \u2013 I loved making my recipient laugh \u2013 and I wonder if that\u2019s where my love of writing began.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I used to be a primary school teacher and sometimes I wrote a play or a little book when I could not find exactly what I wanted to use in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I first became serious about writing stories for children, I tried to write picture books but my stories always grew too long and complicated. So here I am, writing novels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/1046ECDA-0E77-4D3C-8BFC-EE612F0F61C0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81680\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/1046ECDA-0E77-4D3C-8BFC-EE612F0F61C0-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Emily Gale on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/emilygalebooks.com\/\">Emily Gale<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cI always wanted to but I could only ever write the beginnings of stories. That\u2019s why I wrote a lot of poetry in my teens \u2013 it brought the satisfaction of finishing something. They were all little stories, of course, and they were my way of trying out different styles \u2014 I had no idea of how to find my own voice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I didn\u2019t write short stories or novels because I wouldn\u2019t let myself go far enough into the woods \u2014 I didn\u2019t want to get lost, or get the story \u201cwrong\u201d, so I\u2019d just polish the opening to death, give up and start something new.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought of myself as a writer but not a storyteller, and I had some strange hang-ups such as thinking that if I couldn\u2019t magically write a novel, without taking lessons or even reading about how other people did it, then I wasn\u2019t a proper writer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But having my first baby was the catalyst for change: I decided it was now or never and that I\u2019d have to work out how to structure a story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RebeccaLim_byEugeniaLim_MG_0735002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-81685\" src=\"https:\/\/allisontait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RebeccaLim_byEugeniaLim_MG_0735002-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Rebecca Lim on writing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/annabelbarker.com\/rebecca-lim\">Rebecca Lim<\/a>:<\/strong> \u201cI was seven, and coming up with these stories illustrated with wonky coloured pencil sketches all the time.
